“Carving Realistic Bobwhite Quail in Wood” is my second video available. Quail are a specialty of mine. In fact, I’ve carved so many quail over the years, that I think I can carve one in my sleep!
Nevertheless, I break down the carving for you in this video in simple steps using my favorite traditional hand woodcarving tools as well as the best, state of the art, power tools. I show many tips and techniques through an active series of demonstrations from the planning stage to carving inside my shop dust collector as well as outside my house.
I’ll take you through my process of choosing wood, creating patterns, measuring, using a bandsaw, quick power carving outside, refined hand and power carving inside, body and head proportion, eye placement, bill carving, feather carving, sanding, and undercutting (all demonstrating my favorite woods to carve, and time tested tools and supplies. You will then be ready to take the next step in “Texturing The Most Realistic & Softest Looking Feathers in Wood”. In this new video, I demonstrate how to create different soft textures, such as the finest stoning and wood burning on the Bobwhite Quail. Additionally, Sanding and Polishing, Feather layout and surface contours, Quills, Splits, Seamless Joints, Fixing Mistakes, Adding Eyelids and other Details, and Capturing the bird’s Character are all demonstrated and discussed. Finally, my two videos, “Painting The Bobwhite Quail with Acrylics” and “Painting The Bobwhite Quail with Oils” (available together as a free bonus or a separate video) show how I achieve the most effective hue, value, intensity, and sheen to produce the softest, most accurate looking plumage of a three dimensional carved bird. It’s my favorite and most rewarding process!

Teaching Background
Coming from a family of teachers (my father was a professional tennis coach and both grandfathers artists and professors), I have an extensive background in teaching art. In my 20’s and 30’s, I was a sought after instructor teaching many art classes across the country at various schools, such as The John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C. Besides giving private and group lessons teaching woodcarving, painting, and clay modeling myself, I also learned from many of the best artists, carvers, and sculptors across the country and abroad.
After receiving both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in fine art, I was a professor of art at Georgia State University, and then, Kennesaw State University from 2000- 2008. Some courses I taught were three-dimensional design, sculpture, art appreciation, and professional practices/ portfolio review. I have always practiced what I preached, making both my own and my students work more successful.
