Welcome! I have spent almost a year finishing the third and final part of my instructional video series - “Painting The Most Realistic & Softest Looking Feathers of Bobwhite Quail”. Although the Bobwhite Quail, a medium size songbird/gamebird, is the subject matter of this video, the techniques which I demonstrate here can be applied to a wide range of avian subjects- songbirds, shorebirds, gamebirds, ducks, owls, and other birds of prey. I have even used these time-tested methods to paint mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and insects too!

I have spent over the last 40 years perfecting techniques that produce the softest looking feathers in wood through my carving, texturing, and painting processes. In fact, I found many ways to accurately capture detail and replicate feathers through very fine woodcarving, wood burning and stoning/grinding techniques with both power and hand tools. Consequently, I share these refined tips that I’ve learned with you in the first two videos.

During this third video, I take you through a series of instructional lectures and active demonstrations showing you how to paint the most realistic and softest looking feathers on a carved and textured Bobwhite Quail. Additionally, Wood Sealing, Priming, Color Properties and Theory, Composition, Paints, Brushes, Stencils, Airbrushing, Dry Brushing, Wet on Wet Blending, and other Artist’s Techniques will all be demonstrated and discussed. Capturing the bird’s Details and Character through proper hue, value, intensity, and sheen will be stressed. As a result, you can achieve the softest, most accurate looking plumage of a three dimensional  bird carved in wood. Of course, these methods will also work on a wide variety of materials/grounds. 

As an added bonus, “Painting The Bobwhite Quail Using Oils” will be featured for a free video addition! That equals almost three hours of total instruction! Although it’s optional to finish with oils, you can learn how I use oil paint to achieve an even richer, softer finish. Different Paints, Brushes, Thinners, and Techniques are discussed and demonstrated. Finally, I present my finished “Foraging Bobwhite Quail” sculpture with commentary.

Achieving the most effective hue, value, intensity, and sheen to produce the softest, most accurate looking plumage of a three dimensional carved bird in wood in efficient painting methods are all discussed.
