“Family Tree” -Wood, Metal, Acrylic, Oil. My butterfly carved in wood added to a pair of carved and painted pileated woodpeckers brings creative innovation and a story of curiosity to this unique new sculpture, available on my website. While Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are one of the most common butterflies in North America and the state butterfly of Georgia, I wanted to show the beauty and fragility of wood and the natural world in this original sculpture. I hope to also inspire and bring joy to the viewer. Witnessing a pileated woodpecker, the largest living woodpecker in North America, is quiet memorable. These magnificent, flashy, loud, but shy birds prefer older growth forests with standing dead trees. They occupy the same territories throughout their life, establishing strong family bonds. In fact, they are known to mate for life. Consequently, I wanted to tell the story of partnership, family, interconnectedness, and the beauty of nature. After all, we all share this planet and its natural resources.
