Flying with Scissors (Scissor-tailed Flycatcher)

This original sculpture featuring a scissor-tailed flycatcher with yellow jasmine was selected and published in The Southeastern Wildlife Arts Festival 2021 Art Book.

I remember being in awe the first time I observed a scissor-tailed flycatcher catch insects in the air. I was birdwatching during spring migration in Dauphin Island, Alabama. This bird, which had just crossed The Gulf of Mexico, was effortlessly flying into the wind with its scissor tail streaming behind it. Consequently, I carved this bird from one piece of wood, including its long tail blowing in the wind. While I also carved yellow jasmine flowers, I left part of the live oak base natural to reflect the bird’s habitat. I hope you enjoy my one-of-a-kind original sculpture.
