“Peace Altar”

I created a series of Dove- “Peace Altar” sculptures in graduate school, twenty years ago. This one features an animated mourning dove perched on top of interpretive clouds or its nest as feathers descend from the heavens. Carved from one piece of basswood, my style here is a little more impressionistic than most of my work. I left mallet and gauge marks with my tools and did not texture every feather barb, but loosely painted them, instead. Consequently, the viewer’s eye goes to the essential movement of the work. Also, the concepts of life, death, peace, and resurrection are explored in this award winning sculpture (Award of Excellence at South Cobb Arts Alliance 25th National Juried Exhibition, 2012).
