Towhee’s Terrain

Here’s my new sculpture of an Eastern Towhee carved in wood. Sometimes secretive but often common, Eastern Towhees may first be noticed by the sound of industrious scratching in leaf-litter under dense thickets. Consequently, I fabricated leaves out of metal and attached them to this informal, hardwood burl base. Although in parts of the Southeast and Florida towhees sometimes have white eyes, I depicted my sculpture with the more common red eyes. That way, I carved and painted a little red beetle to compliment this handsome songbird.
