Here are some photos from the  39 Annual Charlotte Woodcarver’s Showcase of Woodcarvers Competition which took place at Central Piedmont College in Charlotte, N.C. in March, 2022.. It was great catching up with old friends and introducing them to my fiancé Jenny. There were over 150 woodcarvers from all over the U.S. and abroad competing in all genres of woodcarvings. Thanks to The Charlotte Woodcarver’s Club, the university, numerous judges, and all the volunteers involved to make this event run smoothly and be fun and memorable!

I was honored to win Best in Show-Birds with “Flying with Scissors.” This marks my 100th Best in Show award, which is a great honor. Also, I won numerous first place awards at the highest level of competition. I look forward to returning next year.

Here is some information and inspiration about my original sculpture, “Flying with Scissors.” I remember being in awe the first time I observed a scissor-tailed flycatcher catch insects in the air. I was birdwatching during spring migration in Dauphin Island, Alabama. This bird, which had just crossed The Gulf of Mexico, was effortlessly flying into the wind with its scissor tail streaming behind it. Consequently, I carved this bird from one piece of wood, including its long tail blowing in the wind. While I also carved yellow jasmine flowers, I left part of the live oak base natural to reflect the bird’s habitat. I hope you enjoy my one-of-a-kind original sculptures.
