Bats Are Good!

‘Bats are Good!“ is the title of this original wood sculpture. It’s definitely a conversation piece, especially with everyone’s (including mine) experience with them. Note- I added carved white flowers to the vine since this photo was taken. It really improves the compositional movement and lightens the artwork.

Bats are the second most diverse group of mammals on earth and play a critical role in the maintenance of healthy ecosystems. While some bats are pollinators, they also help control insects.

Their populations have been declining for decades though. Recent threats such as the white-nose syndrome (WNS) and wind energy development have accelerated the declines in the U.S. At least 5.5 million bats have died from WNS since 2006, when I carved my first bat to in wood bring attention to their demise. Unfortunately, more research and a coordinated program to monitor bat populations in North America is still in need.
